Looker Studio for Agencies: Free, but at What Price?

Why Looker Studio Is the Default Answer

Ask any agency community for a reporting tool and the first answer is almost always Looker Studio. For good reasons. The tool is from Google, completely free, unlimited in the number of reports, and maximally flexible — you can build practically any layout you can think of. For the native Google sources (GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Sheets, BigQuery, YouTube) you don't have to spend a cent.

These strengths are real, and this article isn't out to downplay them. But "free" is a statement about Looker Studio's license price, not its total cost. As soon as you use it in agency operations, three cost blocks appear that are on no invoice. Let's look at them one by one.

Cost Block 1: The Meta Ads Paywall

The first block arrives the moment a client runs Facebook or Instagram campaigns. Looker Studio has no native Meta Ads connector. So you need a paid partner connector: Supermetrics from €39–49/month (with tight limits on the entry plan), Porter Metrics from $15/month, or Coupler.io from $99/month (as of July 2026).

The tricky part: these connectors are usually themselves billed per source or per account and have account caps. At 30 clients with Meta Ads you quickly end up in enterprise negotiations with Supermetrics, because the number of connectable accounts per data source is limited. So "free" only holds as long as your entire stack consists of Google products — and that applies to almost no performance agency.

Cost Block 2: Your Time for Building and Maintaining

The biggest hidden cost block is your time. Every Looker dashboard is built by hand. Reckon conservatively with 2–3 hours of setup per client. At an internal hourly rate of €90, that's €180–270 per client — so at 10 clients, €1,800–2,700 just for the setup.

And setup isn't the end of it. Templates have to be copied and updated per client, connectors break and need fixing, new campaigns get added, changed naming conventions get followed through. Even one hour of maintenance per client per month costs €900/month at 10 clients. Cost Block 3: No Portal, No Monitoring

The third block isn't a direct cost line but a functional gap you have to close expensively elsewhere. Looker Studio has no client-portal concept: your clients get no individual login under which they can view their numbers whenever they want — only shared report links. The professional "my own access at my agency" impression is missing.

Just as much, Looker Studio doesn't monitor your campaigns. It displays data, but it doesn't look for you. No budget alerts at 80% or 100% of the budget, no anomaly detection, no lead tracking. If a client budget is already burned on the 20th of the month, you only see it when someone actively opens the dashboard. This active monitoring is exactly what finished reporting platforms bring — and the free toolkit, by design, does not.

When Looker Studio Is Still the Right Choice

Now the fair counter-math, because Looker Studio is unbeatable in some cases — even next to a tool like ours. In these situations you should stick with it:

  • You manage 1–2 clients with a pure Google stack. All connectors are native and free, you build the dashboard once, and maintenance for two clients stays manageable. €0 beats any plan here.
  • Dashboard building is your billable service. If clients pay for tailor-made, pixel-perfect reports in their own branding, build time isn't a hidden cost — it's billable revenue.
  • You need special reports with custom calculations, data from Sheets or BigQuery. No finished tool has that design freedom — MetricDash doesn't either. For such edge cases, Looker Studio stays a useful instrument.
  • Practically everyone knows Looker Studio. The huge template ecosystem and widespread familiarity lower your onboarding time and your clients'.

The Honest Rule of Thumb

The line runs at two points: as long as your stack is entirely Google and the maintenance time doesn't hurt, Looker Studio is the right, free choice. The math tips exactly when the first Meta connector comes due or copying dashboards becomes a weekly routine.
